Dear AAIM,

I just returned from a wonderful two week vacation to Bosnia and Croatia. I spent two days in Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia, a city with a long and proud history of religious tolerance and host of the 1984 Winter Olympics, which suffered horrible inter-ethnic and interreligious violence in the early 1990s. As I visited the synagogues, mosques, Orthodox and Catholic churches, I confronted again the paradox of religion as a force for both unity and for division.

On August 7th, AAIM will be holding its quarterly delegate assembly where representatives from faith and community organizations will gather to ensure that in Austin, faith fosters harmony. During the assembly, participants will break into small groups designed to foster conversation around race and interfaith relationships. All are invited to attend. Please RSVP by Friday, August 3 with Amanda Quraishi, aquraishi@aaimaustin.org or by calling (512) 386-9145.

I'll see you there!

Rev. Emilee Whitehurst, M.Div.
Executive Director

Dining for Darfur

Did you ever wonder: "What could I do to help end the genocide in Darfur?" Here's one easy step: have a meal in an Austin restaurant participating in the "Dining for Darfur" dine-out on Monday, August 27th,

Participating restaurants will donate 5% of their gross sales to the American Jewish World Services (AJWS), 100% of which will be used for AJWS's nonsectarian humanitarian relief efforts for the victims of Darfur.

TAKE ACTION!

  • Recruit a restaurant to participate in the Austin "Dining for Darfur" event
  • Encourage your congregation or other community organization to support the event.
