Donna & Philip Berber
2010 Hope Award Honorees
Donna and Philip Berber are leading social entrepreneurs
and innovators from the world of International Aid. The couple launched A
Glimmer of Hope in 2000 and was recently recognized as being among The 25 Best
Givers in the World by Barrons Magazine, placing sixth on the list based on
their effectiveness. A Glimmer of Hope is engaged in humanitarian aid and
development in Ethiopia
and has developed a groundbreaking model for helping the rural poor to lift themselves
out of poverty. Originally from London and Dublin, the Berbers were newlyweds when Ethiopias
Great Famine of 1984-85 was witnessed by a worldwide television audience. This
catastrophe planted the seed to do more and when Philip sold CyBerCorp, an
online trading firm, to Charles Schwab in 2000, the couple decided their time
to act had come. Since then, A Glimmer of Hope has improved the lives of more
than 2.5 million people in Ethiopia
with 100% of all donations being used to provide access to clean water, health
care, education and microcredit.
A Glimmer of Hope is an entrepreneurial social-profit
organization that helps lift women and children in Sub-Saharan Africa out of
extreme poverty by providing them with water wells, health clinics, schools and
micro-finance loans. A Glimmer of Hope has developed an innovative and efficient
model that has been recognized for improving millions of lives over the last
decade. The organizations unique 100% Promise means all donations go directly
to funding the projects as its endowment covers all operating expenses. A
Glimmer of Hope has completed more than 4,000 projects throughout Ethiopia. With
photographs, video and GPS coordinates, donors personally experience how their
contributions, large and small, are changing lives. Before starting any
project, A Glimmer of Hope listens to the needs of the benefiting community
and involves them fully in the process from project site selection to
construction to ongoing maintenance. By partnering with local NGOs and
each community, A Glimmer of Hope ensures long-term sustainability. A
Glimmer of Hope was recently ranked #6 globally on Barrons list of The Best 25
Givers, based on effectiveness and impact. Donna and Philip Berbers
understanding that poverty comes in many forms resulted in their decision to
launch A Glimmer of Hope Austin in 2003. Glimmer Austin is committed to improving the lives of
young people and senior adults who suffer from exclusion, social injustices,
neglect, abandonment and educational disadvantages. The organization has now
funded over 100 projects that have made a difference in the lives of thousands
of people across Central Texas.
Donna and Philip's dedication to putting Hope in Action continues to assist vulnerable and voiceless populations near and far. |
